What is EFOG - EBCOG?

EFOG-EBCOG is the international qualifying examination for doctors training to become specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology across Europe. It’s set and run by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG) – the professional body, affiliated with the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS), that sets training and clinical care standards for O&G across the continent, with 37 member societies spanning Europe.

The examination is given in two parts. Part 1, the Knowledge Based Assessment, tests your theoretical grounding in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through two papers sat on the same day – one on Obstetrics, one on Gynaecology. Passing Part 1 makes you eligible to sit Part 2: the OSCE, a clinical skills assessment that evaluates how confidently you can apply that knowledge in real clinical scenarios.

Clear both parts, and you’re awarded the European Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EFOG-EBCOG) – a qualification recognised across Europe and internationally as a genuine mark of specialist-level competence in the field.

Exam Eligibility

To be eligible for the EFOG – EBCOG, candidates must hold a primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a World Directory of Medical Schools listed institution.

EFOG-EBCOG Part 1 Eligibility:

  • Candidates must have a primary medical degree; they must be medical doctors
  • Candidates must be listed on the Register of Medical Practitioners of their own country
  • Candidates can sit Part 1 Examination after they have completed at least 3 years in their training programme.

EFOG-EBCOG Part 2 Eligibility:

  • After the successful completion of the EFOG Part 1 exam.

Number of Attempts and Currency Guidelines

As per EBCOG guidelines, there is no restriction on the number of times one can sit Part 1 of the examination.

Candidates are required to complete their EFOG Part 2 OSCE assessment within three years of passing the EFOG Part 1 examination. Beyond three years, even successful candidates will have to attempt and pass EFOG Part 1 again to qualify for Part 2 OSCE.

Exam Structure

The EFOG – EBCOG examination is given in two parts, namely Part 1, and Part 2 OSCE.

EFOG Part 1:

  • EFOG-EBCOG Part 1 is the Knowledge Based Assessment that marks the first step towards the prestigious EBCOG qualification, testing the core obstetrics and gynaecology knowledge candidates have built up through their specialist training.
  • The exam consists of two papers sat on the same day – one on Obstetrics, one on Gynaecology – each three hours long, for six hours of assessment in total.
  • Each of the two papers (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) consists of a total of 125 Questions.
  • The Questions are distributed as follows:

30 EMQs x 3 scenarios = 90 Questions/answers

35 SBAs x 1 = 35 Questions/answers

EFOG-EBCOG Part 2 OSCE:

  • EFOG-EBCOG Part 2 is the OSCE that follows Part 1, testing how well candidates apply their knowledge in real clinical scenarios.
  • Ten stations make up the exam: an article reading and evaluation pair, two basic and two complex technical-skills stations split across both specialties, two on clinical decision-making, and two on communication.
  • Each station runs ten minutes with two minutes’ reading time, conducted in English with standardised stations and marking for every candidate.
  • Stations may involve simulated patients, medical simulators, or examiners directly, scoring skills like history-taking, technical competence, teamwork, and clinical judgement.
