Methods of Assessment (Part 1)

Part 1 Examination – KBA (Knowledge Based Assessment)

The Part 1 Examination takes place at least once a year. The papers consist of Extended Matching Questions (EMQs), Single Best Answer Questions (SBAs) and Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs).

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) 10 Questions in each Paper

MCQs are a list of statements or questions to which either “true’ or ‘false’ should be answered. The candidate gets 1 mark for each correct answer (X5 questions maximum 5 marks). There will be no negative marking.

Method of Assessment (Part 2)

The examination consists of 10 stations, each lasting 10 minutes, with a two-minute reading period before each station. A rest station is included for candidates to review a scientific article, which is then evaluated in a subsequent station. The assessment is designed to test a range of clinical skills and knowledge, with stations focusing on:

• Basic and Complex Technical Skills: Two stations each for Obstetrics and Gynaecology .
• Knowledge Integration and Decision-Making: Two stations for Obs and Gyn, requiring candidates to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical scenarios.
• Communication Skills: Two stations dedicated to evaluating communication abilities.

OSCE Structure and Methodology

The OSCE is structured to ensure objectivity and consistency in evaluation. All candidates are assessed using the same stations and a standardized marking scheme.

• Objective: Examiners use a pre-defined mark scheme, awarding marks for each correctly performed step. This minimizes subjectivity in the assessment of clinical skills.
• Structured: Each station has a specific task with detailed instructions. When simulated patients are used, they follow a standardized script to ensure a consistent experience for all candidates.
• Clinical Examination: The examination evaluates the application of both practical and theoretical knowledge. Any questions asked by examiners are standardized and aligned with the mark sheet to ensure fair and consistent scoring.

Examiners observe and rate candidates’ performance at each station, which may involve standardized patients, medical simulators, or clinical problem-solving tasks. The entire examination is conducted in English.

Reward and Title

When both parts of the examination have been passed the certificate of the EFOG-EBCOG will be awarded. Successful candidates will receive the award of European Fellow of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EFOG) – EBCOG and may use this title. Successful candidates become EBCOG Fellows in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EFOG-EBCOG) and will be given a certificate of Fellowship.
