Navigating a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is not that easy; not only do you need the perfect clinical skills, but the right credentials to verify that you possess those skills. One such gold standard that can back up your professional excellence is the European Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EFOG), awarded by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG). It is not just a certificate; it proves that your practice aligns with the highest European standards.
But why should you opt for it? In an ever-evolving medical landscape, the EFOG EBCOG offers you a competitive edge. With this qualification, you receive international recognition along with expanded career opportunities with better remuneration. Preparing for the EFOG qualification gives you greater confidence in your clinical decision-making. To achieve this qualification, you need to complete two hurdles: EFOG Part 1 KBA and EFOG Part 2 OSCE. In this blog, we will discuss the EFOG Part 1 KBA.
Advantages of EFOG-EBCOG
Achieving the EFOG qualification offers numerous advantages, such as:
- International Recognition: With the EFOG qualification, candidates achieve international recognition, enhancing their professional standing.
- Career Progression: EFOG certificate holders will have expanded career opportunities with better remuneration.

- Enhanced OBGYN Skills: To pass the EFOG exams, you need to possess enhanced OBGYN skills that align with European standards.
EFOG Part 1 KBA: The First Hurdle to Achieve the Fellowship
The journey to become a Fellow begins with the Part 1 examination. This exam determines if the candidate demonstrates the minimum level of knowledge recognised by the EBCOG Examination Committee. It is the gateway that sets the stage for the more advanced clinical assessment in Part 2 OSCE.
Exam Format and Structure
The EFOG-EBCOG Part 1 examination takes place once a year. Candidates must understand the technical layout of the exam, as it helps to effectively manage time and strategy:
- Duration: The exam is conducted over a single day, consisting of two papers. Each paper lasts 3 hours (6 hours total).
- Focus Areas: One paper focuses on Obstetrics and the other on Gynaecology.
- Passing Criteria: Both papers must be passed individually to successfully pass the Part 1 examination.
- Question Types: The assessment utilises a blend of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Extended Matching Questions (EMQs), and Single Best Answer Questions (SBAs).
Detailed Question Breakdown
Each paper (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) contains a total of 65 primary question stems, resulting in a high-volume assessment of 165 individual items per paper:
- 10 MCQs: Each with 5 components (50 questions/answers total).
- 30 EMQs: Each featuring 3 scenarios (90 questions/answers total).
- 25 SBAs: Traditional single best answer (25 questions/answers total).
