The European Fellowship of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EFOG) is an esteemed qualification in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, awarded by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG). The EBCOG is an organisation dedicated to improving the health of women and newborns by promoting the highest standards of care. EFOG-EBCOG qualification is the highest honour awarded by the EBCOG.

In order to achieve the qualification, the candidates must pass a two-part examination. The purpose of these exams is to assess whether candidates demonstrate the minimum level of knowledge recognised by the EBCOG examination committee. Here, we will explain the format of the first part of the exam, EFOG-EBCOG Part 1.

Understanding the EFOG-EBCOG Part 1 Exam

The Part 1 exam consists of two papers, each lasting three hours. One paper focuses on obstetrics, while the other is based on gynaecology. The exam includes different types of questions, such as extended matching questions (EMQs), single best answer questions (SBAs) and multiple choice questions (MCQs). Candidates must pass both papers separately in order to pass the EFOG EBCOG Part 1 exam.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

MCQs consist of a list of statements or questions for which candidates must select either ‘true’ or ‘false.’ Each correct answer is awarded one mark and there is no negative marking.

Extended Matching Questions (EMQs)

These questions start with a list of around 10-15 possible answers, followed by three related questions. Candidates must choose the best matching answer from the options provided. Some answers may be used more than once, while others may not be used at all. Each correct answer is worth four marks and there is no negative marking.

Single Best Answer Questions (SBAs)

For each SBA question, candidates are given five answer choices, from which they must select the single best answer. While more than one answer might seem appropriate, only one is considered the best. A mark is awarded only if the best answer is chosen. Each correct answer is worth four marks. There is no negative marking.
